We’ll discuss just how morbidly obscene these ticket prices are in a bit…
But first, here are a few observations:
- The inclusion of 5 New England Patriots home games on this list should come as a shock to no one. With an average cheap seat price of $374, their tickets are far & away the most expensive this season.
- Also of no surprise is the fact that all of the home teams are among the top 7 in average ticket price (secondary market).
- The most expensive NFL games historically take place in September & December, and that holds true here. Average NFL ticket prices routinely peak at the start of the season. While the overall price drops in December, costs for the few remaining meaningful games will spike.
And speaking of meaningful games…
NFL ticket prices – how much is too much?
The 49ers-Seahawks contest at CenturyLink Field on December 29th matches teams with the 2nd- & 9th-highest average ticket prices.
In addition, there’s a hell of a lot at stake – a divisional crown, a first-round bye, and a possible #1 seed (49ers).
Tickets for this season-ending spectacle start at $573, on average, making it the 2nd-highest recorded price by NFLCheapskate this season.
Now, back to the sky-high costs. Keep in mind that the average cost for the 10 most expensive NFL games of $436 is for the cheapest available seats. The overall average ticket price for these games is around $750.
To repeat, seven hundred and fifty bucks. For one. Single. Ticket. (let that sink in for a moment)
For perspective, $750 is:
- 82% of a week’s pay for the average U.S. worker. (Bureau of Labor Statistics)
- Half the average weekly salary for residents of Seattle. (payscale.com)
How to save 13% on the most expensive NFL games
Indeed, there’s no getting around these horrific game ticket costs. However, you can take comfort in knowing that you can save 13% on NFL tickets, on average.
13% is not much, you say? Well, 13% of a 400 buck seat is $52. For a family or group of 4, that’s $208. In fact, you’d save $73 per ticket for the aforementioned 49ers-Seahawks game.
